How long does each IKEA piece take?

Guide times for one experienced assembler, so you know how many hours to agree. Large wardrobes always take two people to stand upright.

Assembly service or someone from your area?

Choose the assembly service for

  • a METOD kitchen: IKEA has a separate installation service for that
  • a big order that has to be assembled right after delivery, with one point of contact
  • work you want an invoice and business liability cover for
  • assembly that also involves electrics or plumbing (that is for an installer, not included at IKEA either)

Ask someone from your area for

  • a PAX, BILLY, KALLAX, MALM or BESTÅ that is already in your home
  • a bed, desk or dining table: jobs of one to three hours
  • two pairs of hands if you help yourself
  • a few pieces of furniture at once, in one visit

How to get IKEA furniture assembled

  1. Post your job for free

Which furniture, how many pieces, which floor and when it suits you. Add the article number or a photo of the box, then a helper knows exactly how much work it is.

  2. Choose who you want

Handy neighbours and students from your area reply with a message. You read what they write and choose who you trust.

  3. Agree and pay each other

In the chat you agree the time and the price, per hour or a fixed amount. After the job you pay the helper yourself, without commission.

Tips for an assembly that goes right first time

  • Put the boxes in the right room

An assembled PAX won't fit through a door or up the stairs. Leave the flat packs where the wardrobe will stand.

  • Check the parts beforehand

Go through the parts list in the manual before the helper arrives. If something is missing, you can order spare parts from IKEA.

  • Have tools ready

The Allen key is in the box; a cordless screwdriver, spirit level, drill and wall plugs that suit your wall are not. Say what you have at home.

  • Fix tall cabinets to the wall

IKEA supplies the anti-tip fitting and requires it for wardrobes and chests of drawers. Agree that the helper includes this in the job.

Frequently asked questions

What does IKEA's assembly service cost?+
IKEA Netherlands outsources assembly to Klusup. You pay a €49 start-up fee per order plus an assembly rate that depends on the products; you see the final price at checkout. If you book directly with Klusup, they charge €60 per hour including VAT.
Does IKEA do the assembly itself?+
No. In the Netherlands, Klusup carries out the assembly as an independent party; you make the agreement with Klusup and IKEA is not a party to it. Fixing to the wall is included, electrics and plumbing are not.
What does it cost to have someone from my area assemble an IKEA wardrobe?+
Count on €18 to €25 per hour, with no start-up fee and no VAT because a private person is helping you. A 2-metre PAX is done in 2 to 3 hours, so roughly €36 to €75. You agree the price beforehand in the chat.
How long does it take to assemble a PAX wardrobe?+
With hinged doors 2 to 3 hours for someone who has done it before, with sliding doors or KOMPLEMENT interior fittings more like 3 to 4 hours. Standing it upright always takes two people.
Does an IKEA wardrobe have to be fixed to the wall?+
Yes, for wardrobes and chests of drawers the manual requires it and IKEA supplies the anti-tip fitting. With the IKEA service it is included; ask a helper from your area to include it and have wall plugs that suit your wall.
I only need help with lifting, not with assembly. Is that possible?+
Yes. Post it as a job of an hour or two and ask for two strong pairs of hands. The moving help page shows what you can expect to pay for that.
