What does a handyman cost per hour? All rates for 2026
A handyman company in the Netherlands usually charges 30 to 55 euros an hour in 2026, often plus call-out charges. Many jobs can be done just as well by a handy helper from your neighbourhood, for a price you agree yourself. In this guide you see what you pay for what, what individual jobs cost and when which choice is smart.
What does a handyman cost per hour in 2026?
The short answer: a professional handyman company usually costs €30 to €55 an hour including VAT in 2026, and call-out charges or a minimum number of hours often come on top. With a private helper, a handy neighbour, student or someone earning extra, you agree a price yourself; the guide price is €18 to €30 an hour, without call-out charges. By ‘hourly rate’ and ‘hourly wage’ we mean the same thing here: the amount you pay per hour worked.
Which rate is reasonable depends mainly on the type of job. These are guide prices for help from the neighbourhood per category:
Guide prices for help from the neighbourhood (2026)
| Type of job | Guide price |
|---|---|
| Garden work | €17 to €25 an hour |
| Cleaning | €17 to €22 an hour |
| Moving help | €15 to €22 an hour |
| Small jobs/DIY | €18 to €30 an hour |
| Babysitting | By age: €3.50 (age 13) to from €14.99 (21+) |
| Dog walking | €10 to €15 per 30-minute walk |
| Groceries | €16 to €20 an hour |
Guide prices: you agree the price yourself. For garden work, cleaning, babysitting, dog walking and groceries the Regeling dienstverlening aan huis (the Dutch scheme for services in and around the home) applies, with the minimum wage for the helper's age plus 8% holiday pay as the floor. Work it out with the price calculator.
Tradesperson or private helper: when do you choose which?
More expensive is not always better, but neither is cheaper. The right choice depends on the risk of the job:
- Always a qualified tradesperson: work on gas, electrics (the fuse box), water/central heating and structural work. Mistakes are dangerous here and your insurer may make difficulties about damage from work not done by a qualified person.
- Fine for a private helper: garden maintenance, cleaning, moving and carrying, assembling furniture, indoor painting, hanging a lamp or curtain rail, groceries and babysitting.
- Grey area: tiling, plastering, bigger painting jobs. Look at proven experience and reviews here rather than just the price.
Rule of thumb: does a mistake only cost you time or a little money? Then a handy helper will do. Could a mistake cause danger or major damage? Then pay for a qualified tradesperson.
Price per job: tradesperson or local helper
An hourly rate says little if you do not know how long a job takes. So below is what commonly requested jobs cost in practice. Handyman company prices include VAT and call-out charges or a starting fee; the prices of a local helper are based on the average duration times the guide price per hour.
What does a job cost? Indication 2026
| Job | Duration | Handyman company | Local helper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hanging a lamp or ceiling light | 1 hour | €50 to €80 | €18 to €30 |
| Hanging a curtain rail or shelf | 1 hour | €50 to €80 | €18 to €30 |
| Assembling a wardrobe or bed (IKEA) | 1 to 2 hours | €60 to €120 | €20 to €60 |
| Filling holes and touching up a wall | 1 hour | €40 to €60 | €18 to €30 |
| Painting a room (walls, 20 m²) | 4 to 6 hours | €200 to €350 | €75 to €180 |
| Tidying the garden (hedge, weeds, lawn) | 3 hours | €150 to €200 | €50 to €75 |
| Carrying moving boxes, 2 people | 4 hours | €300 to €450 | €120 to €175 |
| Replacing a tap | 1 hour | €70 to €100 | Better a tradesperson |

5 factors that determine what you pay
1. The type of job
The more specialised the work, the higher the rate. Walking dogs or doing groceries is around €10-15 an hour, while handiwork such as assembling furniture or painting moves towards €25-40.
2. The region
In Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht rates are 10-20% higher than in smaller towns. On the other hand there are more helpers there, so comparing pays off especially in the city.
3. Urgency and timing
Does it need doing today or at the weekend? Count on a surcharge. If you can wait a week and are flexible about the time, you get more and sharper replies.
4. Materials and tools
Material costs (paint, plants, fixings) always come on top of the hourly rate. Agree beforehand who buys the materials and whether tools need to be there. A helper with their own tools sometimes charges a few euros more per hour.
5. Minimum charge and call-out fees
Handyman companies often use call-out charges or a minimum number of hours; the amount differs per company. Especially for jobs of half an hour to an hour you therefore pay relatively a lot. Private helpers from the neighbourhood rarely charge this.
Example calculation: a 3-hour garden job
Say your garden needs tidying: trimming the hedge, weeding, mowing the lawn. A job of about 3 hours:
Landscaping company
Local helper
Same garden, same result: €110 difference. For specialist pruning of monumental trees you hire a landscaper; for regular maintenance the difference is mostly the bill.
How to never pay too much
Compare several replies
Post your job with a clear description and let helpers reply with their rate. Comparing a few replies usually gets you more than haggling.
Ask for a fixed price for bigger jobs
For a job of more than half a day, agree a total price instead of an hourly rate. Overrunning is then not your risk.
Be clear about the job
Photos, measurements and a concrete description prevent a helper from quoting high 'just in case'.
Check reviews and experience
The cheapest reply is not always the best deal. Someone with good reviews often works faster and is cheaper overall.
Agree everything beforehand
Rate, material costs, who arranges what. Clear agreements beforehand mean no discussion afterwards.
Common mistakes clients make
Rules: VAT and paying a private person
With a handyman company you normally pay 21% VAT on labour and materials. Exception: for painting, plastering and insulation work on homes older than 2 years, the reduced rate of 9% applies to labour. Ask about it with your quote.
With a private helper, household jobs (garden, cleaning, groceries, small jobs in and around the house) fall under the Regeling dienstverlening aan huis, the Dutch scheme for services in and around the home: if someone works for you as a private person for at most 3 days a week, you have no employer obligations and do not need to withhold anything. The helper declares the income themselves to the Belastingdienst, the Dutch tax office. Check the current conditions with the Dutch government (Rijksoverheid), because schemes can change.
A handyman for 10 euros an hour: does it exist?
It is one of the most searched questions about small jobs, so here is an honest answer: a handyman company for 10 euros an hour does not exist. VAT, insurance and travel time alone cost a company more than that. Anyone charging 10 euros an hour is almost always a school pupil, student or neighbour who wants to earn a bit extra.
For jobs without tools or expertise, that rate does occur in practice: walking dogs, doing groceries, raking leaves, helping carry. For anything that involves experience or tools, such as assembling a wardrobe or painting a room, 10 euros is too little. You then get few replies, or replies from people who have never done it. Count on 18 to 20 euros an hour as a minimum there.
Still want to keep it cheap? Post a small job with a fixed price instead of an hourly rate, for example 25 euros for hanging three lamps. That is attractive for a handy neighbour and clear for you. You find a local helper through small jobs near me.
Frequently asked questions
What does a handyman cost per hour in 2026?
A professional handyman company usually charges €30 to €55 an hour including VAT, often plus call-out charges. With a private helper you agree a price yourself; the guide price is €18 to €30 an hour, without call-out charges.
What is a reasonable hourly rate for small jobs?
For simple work such as garden maintenance, cleaning or carrying, €15-25 an hour is reasonable. If you pay less than €12, do not expect experience; if you pay more than €35, you are buying craftsmanship you usually do not need for simple jobs.
Why is a handyman company so much more expensive?
A company passes VAT, insurance, travel time, tools and overhead on in its rate. That is fair for specialist work, but for simple jobs you pay for that overhead just the same.
Agree a fixed price or an hourly rate?
Up to half a day: an hourly rate is fine. Bigger than that: ask for a fixed price, so overrunning is not your risk.
Can I simply pay a private person for a job?
Yes, for household jobs that is allowed under the Regeling dienstverlening aan huis (max. 3 days a week per helper). The helper is responsible for declaring it to the Belastingdienst.
What is a handyman's hourly wage?
A handyman's hourly wage in 2026 is between €18 and €30 an hour for a private helper (guide price), and between €30 and €55 an hour for a professional handyman company (plus call-out charges). Hourly wage and hourly rate mean the same thing here: the amount you pay per hour worked.
Is there a handyman for €10 an hour?
For €10 an hour you rarely find an experienced handyman. You mainly see that rate for simple jobs such as walking dogs, doing groceries or light carrying, often by school pupils or students. For work that needs experience or tools, €10 an hour is unrealistically low. Count on at least €18 to €20 an hour then.
