Help lifting heavy things

Not every job is a whole move. Often it is about one heavy thing: a washing machine upstairs, a sofa that won't go round the stairs, a wardrobe that has to come apart and go back together. You don't hire a removal company for that. You post a job of an hour or two and ask for two strong pairs of hands, at the hourly rate from the table above.

Washing machine, fridge or dryer

Always with two people. A hand truck or lifting strap halves the effort, ask whether your helper brings one.

Sofa or mattress up a narrow staircase

Measure the turn in the stairs beforehand and check whether the legs come off. Put that in your job, then a helper knows what to expect.

Heavy boxes and books

Rather many small boxes than a few heavy ones. Then everyone lifts safely and it goes faster.

Piano, safe or aquarium

That is work for a specialised company with the right equipment, not for help from your area.

Help with moving: what can you ask?

Moving help from your area is not a removal company, but it is more than just carrying. Say in your job exactly what you want, then a helper knows what they are replying to.

You can ask a helper for this

  • packing and labelling boxes, the day before or on the day itself
  • taking furniture apart, carrying, loading and assembling it again at the new address
  • loading and unloading the van, with you or with a second helper
  • leaving the old home swept clean

You arrange this yourself

  • the van, including blankets and straps
  • a parking space or permit at both addresses
  • the price and the payment, directly with the helper
  • a removal company for a piano, safe or furniture lift

How to hire moving help

  1. Post your job for free

Date, time, from and to which address, how many boxes and large pieces of furniture, and whether there is a lift or stairs. The more specific, the better the replies.

  2. Compare helpers from your area

Students and neighbours reply with their hourly rate and availability. You read their message and profile and choose who you want.

  3. Move and pay each other

You arrange the van yourself, the helpers do the lifting. You pay directly afterwards, without commission or subscription.

How to get the most out of your moving help

Pack everything before the help arrives

You want paid hours spent on lifting, not on waiting until the last box is closed.

Mention heavy and fragile things beforehand

A washing machine, a fridge or a solid wood wardrobe needs two strong people and a hand truck. Put it in your request.

Rent the van yourself

You can rent a van for about 50 to 150 euros per day. That saves the most money compared with a removal company.

Have water and something to eat

Four hours of carrying is hard work. A sandwich and coffee are remembered, and your helper will gladly come again.

Agree the rate and end time beforehand

Per hour with an estimated end time, or a fixed price for the whole job. Put it in writing in the chat.

Frequently asked questions about moving help

What does moving help cost per hour?+
In 2026 a removal company usually charges 30 to 50 euros per mover per hour, with a van and weekend surcharge on top; a student moving service for example €39 per mover and €39 for the van per hour, excluding VAT, with a 30 to 35% surcharge on Saturdays. With a student or neighbour via KlusjeBij you agree an hourly rate yourself; the guide price is 15 to 22 euros per hour, and you rent the van yourself.
What does it cost to hire movers?+
With a removal company you usually pay 30 to 50 euros per mover per hour in 2026, plus the van and a Saturday surcharge. Two movers with a van, four hours on a Saturday, easily costs around 736 euros including VAT at a student moving service. Two people from your area carrying for the same four hours cost 144 euros together, plus a van you rent yourself for about 70 euros.
Hire movers or moving help from my area?+
Hire a removal company if you have to move a whole household, need a furniture lift, have expensive or heavy things such as a piano, or want to be insured against damage. Choose moving help from your area if you arrange a van yourself and mainly need extra hands for boxes, a sofa, a wardrobe or the stairs. Most student rooms and small moves fall into that second group.
How many moving helpers do I need?+
For a student room or small flat, two people carrying is usually enough, including yourself. For a family home count on three to four people, especially with stairs. Say in your request how many boxes and large pieces of furniture there are, then helpers can judge whether that is right.
Who pays for damage if something breaks?+
With a removal company, damage is usually insured through the company. If a private person helps, damage they cause by accident may fall under their own liability insurance, but not always and often up to a maximum. Your own home contents insurance usually doesn't cover damage by helpers. Agree beforehand who lifts the heavy or fragile things, pack glassware yourself and leave very expensive items to a company.
How quickly will I find moving help?+
Post your job at least a week in advance, then you have the most choice. How quickly replies come depends on where you live; most helpers are signed up in the big cities. Does it have to be this weekend? Then post the job with a slightly higher rate and a clear time, that gets replies faster.
