  2. Meet first

Tips for good regular help

  • Start with a trial morning

Arrange one session first. Then you both see whether it clicks and how long the job really takes.

  • Make a fixed task list

Bathroom, kitchen, vacuuming, changing the beds: a list prevents misunderstandings and saves explaining every week.

  • Handle the key carefully

Only hand over a key when you trust someone, and agree what happens if it gets lost.

  • Budget for holiday pay and days off

Under the scheme for services in the home, your helper is entitled to 8% holiday pay and holiday days. Include it in your budget.

Frequently asked questions

What does a cleaner cost per hour?+
In 2026 a cleaning company charges about €30 to €45 per hour, an agency or platform for household help from about €19 to €25. If you hire someone directly, you agree a rate yourself, but at least the minimum wage for your helper's age: from 21, €14.99 per hour since 1 July 2026, plus 8% holiday pay.
What is the scheme for services in the home?+
If you hire someone privately for household work, less than 4 days a week, the Regeling dienstverlening aan huis applies. You pay at least the minimum wage plus 8% holiday pay, your helper builds up holiday days (4 times the number of hours per week, per year) and during illness you keep paying for up to 6 weeks. You don't withhold wage tax; your helper declares the income themselves.
Does my cleaner have to pay tax?+
Under the scheme you, as the person hiring, don't withhold tax, but your helper does have to declare the income to the Dutch tax office (Belastingdienst). Working on the books protects you both, for example in case of illness or an accident.
How many hours of cleaning help do I need?+
For an average flat, 2 to 3 hours a week is often enough, for a family home 3 to 4 hours. Start with a trial morning, then you see how long it really takes.
How do I find a reliable cleaner?+
Post your job, read the replies and arrange to meet before you hand over a key. Ask about experience and references, and start with a trial morning.
