  2. Meet first

Read the replies and arrange to meet, preferably with the children there.

  3. Agree arrangements and rate

Times, bedtimes, what the babysitter may and may not do, and the rate. You pay the babysitter yourself.

Tips for a babysitter you can rely on

  • Choose a babysitter who suits your children's age

A baby needs more experience than an eight-year-old. Ask about experience and a first-aid certificate, and perhaps call a previous family.

  • Mind the working hours of young babysitters

A babysitter of 13 or 14 may work at most 2 hours on a school day, and normally only between 7:00 and 19:00. For an evening, choose someone of 16 or older.

  • Agree a rate after midnight or for a sleepover

Nibud advises agreeing this in advance. A fixed amount for the night is often clearest.

  • Write down the key arrangements

Emergency numbers, allergies, bedtime and what the children eat. A note on the fridge prevents hassle.

Post a request, read the replies and arrange to meet first. Ask about experience with children of the same age, a first-aid certificate and perhaps references from other families.
