  3. Agree and pay each other

Agree the time and the price in the chat. Afterwards you pay yourself, without commission.

Tips for garden help that keeps coming back

  • Say which tools you have

A mower, hedge trimmer and green bin at home? Then your helper doesn't need to bring anything and the job is done sooner.

  • Regular appointment, regular rate

Someone who comes to mow every two weeks knows your garden. A regular appointment saves you explaining and your helper travel time.

  • Plan the hedge in time

Don't trim during the bird breeding season; disturbing an occupied bird's nest is against the law. Check the hedge first.

  • Stick to the minimum wage

Does someone come regularly, less than 4 days a week? Then the Regeling dienstverlening aan huis applies: at least the minimum wage for your helper's age plus 8% holiday pay.

Frequently asked questions

What does a gardener cost per hour?+
In 2026 a landscaper or self-employed gardener usually charges €35 to €65 per hour, larger companies up to about €75, often excluding 21% VAT and with travel costs. Garden help from your area is cheaper; the minimum wage is the lower limit, for a helper of 21 or older €14.99 per hour since 1 July 2026, plus 8% holiday pay.
Do I need to arrange anything as a private person if I hire a gardener from my area?+
Garden maintenance falls under the Regeling dienstverlening aan huis if someone works for you less than 4 days a week. You then pay at least the minimum wage plus 8% holiday pay, your helper builds up holiday days and during illness you keep paying for up to 6 weeks. You don't withhold wage tax: the helper declares the income to the Belastingdienst themselves.
How often does the lawn need mowing?+
In the growing season, from about April to October, usually once a week to once every two weeks. That makes a regular arrangement with someone from your area handy.
Can a gardener from my area take away green waste?+
Sometimes, but don't count on it. A private person usually has no trailer. Agree that the waste goes in your green bin or that you take it to the recycling centre (milieustraat) yourself.
How quickly will I find a gardener?+
That depends on where you live and the season. More helpers are signed up in the big cities than in smaller towns. Post your job well before the date and add a clear price.
