Side income on Dutch benefits: what is and is not allowed in 2026?
Do you receive a Dutch benefit and want to earn extra? You can, but there are rules. In this article we explain what is allowed per type of benefit.
Important: always report it!
You must report ALL side income to the body that pays your benefit (the UWV or your municipality), even if you only earn a small amount. Not reporting it is fraud and can lead to having to pay money back.
WW benefit: how earning extra works
WW is the Dutch unemployment benefit, paid by the UWV. With a WW benefit you may earn extra, but your income is offset against your benefit. The good news: you always end up with more than just your benefit.
The offset rule
With WW, 70% of your side income is offset. This means:
Worked example WW
- Your WW benefit€1,500
- Side income this month€400
- Reduction (70% of €400)-€280
- Total income€1,620
You keep €120 extra (30% of your side income)
What do you need to do?
- Report your side income to the UWV via "Mijn UWV" (your personal UWV account)
- Report how many hours you worked
- Keep your records (invoices, timesheets)
Social assistance (bijstand): stricter rules
Bijstand is the Dutch social assistance benefit, paid by your municipality. With bijstand the rules are stricter. In principle all your income is deducted in full from your benefit. But there are exceptions.
The earnings disregard
For the first 6 months you may keep 25% of your side income (at most €226 a month). After that, everything is offset.
Worked example bijstand (first 6 months)
- Your bijstand benefit€1,200
- Side income€300
- Disregard (25%)+€75
- Reduction-€225
- Total income€1,275
Important with bijstand
- Ask your municipality for permission beforehand
- Report all income, including small amounts
- Check whether your municipality offers a participation placement (participatieplaats)
WIA/WAO benefit
WIA and WAO are the Dutch incapacity benefits. With a WIA or WAO you may work, but it can affect your benefit. How much depends on the type of WIA:
WGA (partially able to work)
You are encouraged to work. You can top up to 65% of the difference between your old wage and your current earnings.
IVA (fully and permanently unable to work)
You may earn up to 20% of your old wage without consequences. Above that, your benefit may be reassessed.
AOW and earning extra
Good news for pensioners: your AOW (the Dutch state pension) is not reduced if you earn extra. You may earn as much extra as you like. Do keep in mind:
- You pay income tax on your side income
- It can affect your supplementary pension
- Your allowances (zorgtoeslag for healthcare, huurtoeslag for rent) may go down
Tips for earning extra safely
Report everything beforehand
Contact the UWV or your municipality BEFORE you start earning extra.
Keep records
Keep all invoices, timesheets and proof of payment.
Be honest
Fraud leads to having to pay money back and possibly prosecution.
Ask for help
Not sure? Call the UWV helpline or make an appointment with your municipality.
Start small
Begin with a few hours a week to see how it works out.
Conclusion
Earning extra on a benefit is absolutely possible, but the rules differ per benefit. The most important thing: report everything and ask for advice if in doubt. That way you can safely earn a bit extra without running into problems.
