Paid surveys in the Netherlands: what do they really pay?
A few tenners a month, if you take part regularly. It is free and you can do it from the sofa, but it will not make you rich.
In short
- You earn a few euros an hour, often in gift cards.
- Real panels are free and never ask for money or your card details.
- Sign up with several panels: each panel only invites you now and then.

What it pays per hour
A worked example with the table from PanelClix (opens in a new tab): a survey of 6 to 10 minutes earns 75 Clix. For the first payout of €10 you need 1,000 Clix, so 14 of those surveys. That is one and a half to well over two hours of work, and that is before counting the times you drop out of the target group after a few questions.
That comes down to a few euros an hour. In 2020 the NOS (opens in a new tab) (the Dutch public broadcaster) spoke to young people who did it regularly: one earned about €500 in two years at an hour a week, another took months to reach the first tenner.
The advantage: you do it where and when you want, on your phone too. See it as something for in between, not as a side job. For comparison: for work at home the Dutch minimum wage is the floor, from age 21 €16.19 an hour. What you earn with small jobs.
The well-known panels compared
All four are free. According to their own websites:
PanelClix
from age 16Money in your bank account
From 1,000 Clix, which is €10. A survey of 6 to 10 minutes earns 75 Clix.
Toluna
from age 16Points for money or gift cards
15 to 50,000 points per survey, depending on length. Toluna gives no fixed rate to the euro.
GfK Panel

2,000 points is a €10 gift card.
Flycatcher
from age 18Gift cards or a donation
On average 7 surveys a year, so not many.
Points are not always valid forever. At Toluna (opens in a new tab) they expire after 16 months, and at GfK (opens in a new tab) when you cancel your membership. So redeem them in time.

How to get more out of it
- Sign up with more than one panel. Each panel does not have suitable surveys every day.
- Fill in your profile questions completely. A panel uses them to choose which surveys you are invited to.
- Finish a survey once you start it. At Toluna an incomplete survey earns nothing.
- Use a separate email address, so your normal inbox stays quiet.
How to spot a fake survey
According to the Consumentenbond (the Dutch consumers' association), these are the signs:
- You have to pay something to get your prize, such as shipping costs.
- You are asked for your debit or credit card details.
- You have to call a premium 0900 number, or there turns out to be a subscription behind it, for example by text message.
- You have won although you never signed up anywhere, and you have to be quick.
A real promotion is also on the company's own website. For a panel, as the NOS (opens in a new tab) recommends, check whether it is a member of the MOA, the Dutch trade association for research, or has an ISO certificate.
And tax?
There is no clear rule for it. According to the Belastingdienst (opens in a new tab), money for work outside employment and without a business is declared as income from other work, but the Belastingdienst does not mention surveys or gift cards. Toluna (opens in a new tab) itself writes that you may owe tax. If you also earn with small jobs, read what to declare when you earn extra.
Frequently asked questions
How much do you earn with surveys per month?
Usually a few tenners. In 2020 the NOS (the Dutch public broadcaster) called it 'more like pocket money' (tientjes-werk). How much it becomes depends on how often you are invited and whether you fit the target group.
Does joining a panel cost money?
No. Toluna, PanelClix, GfK and Flycatcher are free. If a site asks for money, your card details or a payment to receive a prize, it is fake.
From what age can you fill in surveys?
That differs per panel: GfK from age 13, Toluna and PanelClix from 16, Flycatcher from 18.
Do you get money or gift cards?
That differs too. PanelClix transfers money to your bank account. GfK and Flycatcher only give gift cards or a donation. Toluna mentions money and gift cards, but does not say how many points make a euro.
Do I have to pay tax on survey money?
That is not clearly regulated. According to the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax office), money for work outside employment is declared as income from other work, and Toluna writes in its terms that you may owe tax. The Belastingdienst says nothing specific about surveys. If in doubt, call the BelastingTelefoon (the tax office helpline).
